To help children learn how to make a budget, divide the class into teams of four students. Tell the students that they are going to be a family of four. Their job is to take an income of $500 per week ($2,000 per month) and make a budget that includes rent, lights, heat, food, water, car payment and telephone. You could use the following costs as needs for the family.
1. Rent…$200 weekly (monthly $800) 2. Heat…$50 per week (monthly $200) 3. Water…$10 per week (monthly $40) 4. Car payment…$100 per week (monthly $400) 5. Telephone…depends on phone plan 6. Food…depends on what is purchased Students will need to research food costs, make a meal plan for a week and calculate the cost for food. They will need to do the same for telephone plans. Finally, teams should try to project what other expenses will come up such as school lunches for the kids, doctor’s appointments, etc. They may also want to think about saving for a large item the family would like to purchase. At first students may be thrilled to have $500 to spend. However after seeing all the expenses, the reality of the costs parents need to cover becomes apparent. |
